En los tres años que duro el ministerio del Señor tuvo 12 discípulos a quienes llamo apóstoles para que estuvieran con EL, aprendieran a sus pies y fueran testigos de cada uno de sus milagros que probaban su Divinidad. Antes de morir el Señor les hizo una promesa: “Mas el Consolador, el Espíritu Santo, a quien el Padre enviará en mi nombre, él os enseñará todas las cosas, y os recordará todo lo que yo os he dicho.” Juan 14:26. Y eso es lo que hizo el Espíritu Santo. Les revelo toda la verdad y les recordó lo que EL Señor les había enseñado en los tres años que anduvo con ellos. El libro de los Hechos de los apóstoles nos enseña como los apóstoles fueron bautizados con El Espíritu Santo y ahí empezaron su ministerio.
Los nombres de los 12 apóstoles fueron:
- Pedro: Su nombre era Simón, pero Jesús le dio el sobrenombre Pedro (griego) o Cefas (arameo) que significa piedra. Hijo de Jonás, hermano de Andrés, y probablemente nacido en Betsaida. Fue un humilde pescador que vivía en Capernaum con su esposa y su suegra.
- Andrés era hermano de Simón Pedro, también pescador (4:18). Originalmente discípulo de Juan el Bautista (Jn. 1:35–40), estuvo dispuesto a seguir a Jesús. Según la tradición, Andrés fue crucificado en Grecia. Comúnmente se lo conoce como el primer misionero (Jn. 1:41; 12:22).
- Jacobo, hijo de Zebedeo, hermano de Juan, con quien era socio de Pedro al recibir el llamado de Jesús. Dice Marcos, “a quienes apellidó Boanerges, esto es, Hijos del trueno”; esto no se explica pero tal vez fue por causa de su temperamento un poco explosivo como vemos en Luc. 9:51-56. Hech. 12:1 dice, “En aquel mismo tiempo el rey Herodes echó mano a algunos de la iglesia para maltratarles. 2 Y mató a espada a Jacobo, hermano de Juan”. ¿Por qué a Jacobo en lugar de algún otro apóstol? No sabemos, pero tal vez Jacobo predicaba con mucha fuerza para provocar a los judíos (compárese Hech. 7:51-60, el caso de Esteban).
- Juan, hermano de Jacobo. Es interesante notar que a pesar de haber sido un “hijo del trueno” (Mr. 3:17), termina siendo conocido como el apóstol del amor y el discípulo amado. Fue el apóstol Juan que uso el Espíritu Santo para escribir el libro de Apocalipsis cerca del año 100. Y se cree que fue el único apóstol en morir de manera natural.
- Felipe, originalmente discípulo de Juan el Bautista. Es probable que haya sido amigo de Andrés y de Pedro pues vivían en el mismo pueblo (Jn. 1:44). Se dice que era tímido; sin embargo, llevó a Natanael a Jesús (Jn. 1:45). Le resultó difícil comprender la idea del “reino de Dios” (Jn. 14:8–14). “Felipe le dijo: Señor, muéstranos el Padre, y nos basta. 9Jesús le dijo: ¿Tanto tiempo hace que estoy con vosotros, y no me has conocido, Felipe? El que me ha visto a mí, ha visto al Padre; ¿cómo, pues, dices tú: Muéstranos el Padre?” Juan 14:8-9. En Hch. 1:13 lo encontramos en el aposento alto. La tradición dice que fue misionero en Asia y allí murió.
- Bartolomé, probablemente también llamado Natanael, ya que como muchos otros, tenía dos nombres. No sabemos mucho sobre él, con excepción de su conversión a Cristo (Jn. 1:45–51) y su presencia en el lago de Tiberias cuando el Señor se apareció a él y a otros discípulos (Jn. 21:2).
- Tomás. Su nombre significa “gemelo”. Llamado también Dídimo, Jn. 11:16; 20:24; 21:2 (las dos palabras significan gemelo). Es recordado como el que dudaba (Jn. 20:25). Pero es importante recordar que después el mismo Tomás dijo “Señor mío y Dios mío”. También se debe recordar que él dijo (Jn. 11:16), “Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él”.
- Mateo el publicano: (cobrador de impuestos) — ¿Quién escribió esto? El mismo Mateo. Se refiere a sí mismo, un fiel apóstol de Cristo. No dice Mateo de tal o cual pueblo, o Mateo hijo de fulano de tal, sino “Mateo el publicano”. A los oídos nuestros esa palabra no significa mucho, pero para los judíos era un término de reproche y de mucho desprecio. Mateo sabía que Jesús manifestó su amor hacia él cuando era publicano, y que los publicanos se clasificaban con los peores pecadores.
- Jacobo hijo de Alfeo (así en Mar. 3:18; Luc. 6:15; Hech. 1:13) – “Alfeo” es nombre griego y en arameo es Cleofas (Luc. 24:18; Jn. 19:25). De esta manera este Jacobo se distingue de Jacobo el hijo de Zebedeo.
- Lebeo, por sobrenombre Tadeo, — corresponde a Judas hijo o hermano de Jacobo (Luc. 6:15).
- Simón el cananista, — 6:15, “Simón llamado Zelote”. Los zelotes eran patriotas judíos. “El fanatismo de los zelotes contribuyó a desencadenar la guerra entre judíos y romanos” (V-E). Hech. 5:35-37 habla de tales hombres que levantaron movimientos políticos contra Roma
- Judas Iscariote (hijo de un Simón, Jn. 6:71; Iscariote probablemente indica que él era del pueblo de Queriot, Josué 15:25). Este Judas “era contado con nosotros, y tenía parte en este ministerio” (Hech. 1:17). “Entonces llamando a sus doce discípulos, les dio autoridad sobre los espíritus inmundos” (Mat. 10:1). Siendo uno de los doce, Judas recibió autoridad sobre los espíritus inmundos, etc. Los que enseñan que es imposible caer de la gracia no pueden aceptar que en realidad Judas era un verdadero discípulo, pero si no lo era, entonces Jesús dio poder a un hijo de Satanás para echar fuera a Satanás.
